How to Add Page Numbers to a PDF (Free, No Word Needed)

You have a PDF — a contract, a thesis, a report stitched together from several files — and it has no page numbers. Going back to the Word file isn't an option, because all you have is the PDF. Numbers are what make a long document usable: people can say "see page 14", and a printed copy stays in order if it's dropped.

When this comes up

Most often after merging: you combine a cover letter, an appendix and a scanned form into one file, and each part carries its own numbering — or none at all. Adding one consistent set of numbers at the end fixes that in a single step, without opening any original document.

How PDFLantern's Page Numbers tool works: it stamps a small number on top of every page and leaves everything else exactly as it was. You choose the corner, the format, the first number and the size, and a live preview of page 1 shows where it will land before you download anything.

Step-by-step guide

  1. Open the Page Numbers tool and drop in your PDF.
  2. Pick a position — top or bottom, left, center or right. Bottom center is the usual choice for documents; bottom right suits anything that will be printed double-sided.
  3. Choose a format: a plain number (1), the number and total (1 / 10), or the number between dashes (- 1 -).
  4. Set Start at if the first page shouldn't be 1 — handy when this file continues a longer document.
  5. Tick "Don't number the first page" to leave a cover clean. The next page then shows the next number in sequence, not 1.
  6. Check the preview, then click "Add Numbers & Download."

What it does, and what to watch for

The numbers are added as real text on top of the existing pages; nothing underneath is changed or re-rendered, so text stays sharp and selectable. Pages that were rotated in the original file are handled too — the number appears in the corner you picked as you see it, the right way up, rather than sideways. One thing to know: if your document already has printed numbers in the footer, you'll end up with two. In that case choose a different corner, or number only the pages that need it.

Frequently asked questions

Can I skip the cover page?

Yes — tick "Don't number the first page." The cover stays clean and numbering carries on from the second page.

Can I start from a number other than 1?

Yes. Set "Start at" to any number, for example 15 if this file picks up where another one ended.

Will it change the rest of the page?

No. The number is stamped on top; the original content is untouched, including text, images and layout.

Does it work on pages that are rotated or landscape?

Yes. The position is applied to the page as it appears on screen, so a rotated or landscape page gets its number in the corner you chose, upright.

Is my file uploaded anywhere?

No — everything happens locally in your browser. Your PDF never reaches a server.
